Welcome to the official web site of IceFishingPA and the IFPA Tournament trail. As an organization, IceFishingPA is dedicated to promoting the sport of modern ice fishing in Pennsylvania and the North East, through education, competition and promotion of the sport and the companies that stand behind us.
While ice fishing has long been enjoyed as a prime wintertime activity in Pennsylvania, it has only been recently that the competitive angler has had the chance to test wits and skill against other anglers, and even then, it often meant travelling to other States.
Todays ice fishermen often fish alone or in small groups, spreading across the lake, constantly moving until catchable numbers of fish are found. And when those fish are found, the modern ice fisherman has a virtual arsenal of equipment and technology at their disposal. Sonar units that will display a waxworm in 40ft of water, lightweight portable shelters and small propane heaters, underwater viewing systems that will let the angler watch the fish on a small TV screen, a selection of jigs and lures undreamed of a few years ago, power ice drills that will cut through a foot of ice in seconds, lake maps that show structural elements that may hold fish, and the list could go on and on.
Yet, one of the joys of ice fishing, including competitive tournament fishing, is that even with minimal equipment an angler can still catch fish, and win tournaments. Compared to similar open water tournaments, the investment to enter an IFPA tournament is small, no need for a $30,000 boat or $400 rod an real combos. And the $100 entry fee is within reach of most working class fishermen, while the payout is generous, for many it's the bragging rights that go along with the paycheck that is important.
