 OBX - Surf FISHING

The picture makes it look peaceful and tranquil don't you think?  It's not, it's fishing at it's rawest, as lean and mean and rewarding as it can get. It's called surf fishing, where man, ocean and fish can become one............with some planing.  Whether it's the Drum, the Blues, Flounder, Croakers, Pompano's or maybe the chance at some Albacore that keep calling you back, you understand my addiction to this area.

Below, I have put together some links to places and information that I use to help pass the time when I can't be on the ice. Check them out.  Oh yea, sometimes it is peaceful and tranquil, as beautiful as life can be.

I'm working on this page....................to be done soon.

  • Tradewinds Tackle & Bait - Owned and operated by Alan and Melinda, two of the nicest people you could ask to meet. Located on Ocracoke Island (my area to fish). A nice shop with fresh bait, quality tackle and a great website that gives curent and archived surf fishing reports, along with plenty of good links and info. Make sure to stop in and see them for the latest "where to-how to"
  • Stripers on line - A forum board with lots of good information on surf fishing. While it is geared towards Striped Bass, it has a large membership and plenty of info for the OBX angler, also the home of a very well respected and recomended online store.
  • Pier And Surf - Another forum type site devoted to surf fishing, the one I prefer and hang out on. Lot's of good local info on here, make sure to check out the bible page.
  • DrumDums Place / Lodging - Looking for a fisher friendly kind of place to stay, this is it. Not a fancy hotel, but clean rooms, good prices and great people, Highly recomended. Check them out and tell them the ice fishing guy sent you.
  • Moon Phases - If you are lucky enough to be able to plan your trip in advance, this site will help, maybe. I seem to do better within three days of a new or full moon and if you research old fishing reports, I think you'll find the same.
  • Tide Charts - Maybe you can be there when a high tide comes at dawn or dusk with a new or full moon......................yippie!!!!!!!!! Tides are important when surf fishing, while you might hook up at any point, I try to spend low tide scouting or wadeing out to the first sandbar and high tide fishing from the beach.
  • Joe Malat's Site - Some good info on surf fishing here, make sure to check the "Tips, Tackle an Techniques" page. If you are new to surf fishing, I would recomend buying his surf fishing book, good basic info. And I have heard very good things about his surf fishing schools.
  • Outer Banks Fishing - A site with plenty of good links, including a complete listing of OBX tackle shops. This site will give you all you need to get started.
